It was quite an evening for Matilda The Musical at the 2012 Laurence Olivier Awards! Matilda had received ten nominations and tonight skipped away with SEVEN awards, a record haul for a single show, including Best New Musical.

Rob Howells won Best Set Design and Simon Baker Best Sound Design. Best Director went to Matthew Warchus with Peter Darling claiming Best Theatre Choreographer. Members of the cast triumphed too with Best Actor in a Musical for Bertie Carvel and the four Matildas: Cleo Demetriou, Kerry Ingram, Eleanor Worthington Cox & Sophia Kiely shared the award for Best Actress in a Musical, breaking the record for the youngest Olivier Award-holders.

To see the full list of ten nominations earned by Matilda the Musical, the maximum for which it was eligible, see this earlier blog post. The full list of award winners can be found here.

Many congratulations to Tim and everyone at Matilda The Musical for such an amazing achievement.

Well done Tim and the team. I now have “Naughty” in my head all day (apparently it’s called earworm) and playing over dinner in the evening, because my daughter is doing it with her dance class at school. Words to live by.

(She’s 5, so not quite ready to appreciate “Storm”, but give it time.)

We went to see Matilda last night and were blown away! It’s the best show we’ve seen in years. Brilliant stuff, Tim Minchin. And congratulations to all on and off stage for a very funny, clever and imaginative show.
I hope the little Matilda who got a standing ovation was very happy :)

Warmest congratulations for Matilda’s major success! You have made all your supporters so proud and happy and we hope you can take a moment to bathe in the warm sunshine of it all (even though it looked mightily chilly over there in London). At home here in Sydney, we have the CD (ordered it from the RSC) and practically know it by heart, but now we would really like to see this wonderful musical. Your Australian audiences are ready, willing and waiting!

All I can say is Yippee! I really like Matilda …I just really like it. Especially if it makes more people realise how amazingly clever a musician and lyricist you are. Sam’s mum would have been proud.

Well done all those involved with Matilda!

From the pictures and the videos looks like everyone had a blast at the ceremony.

When is Matilda coming to Australia?

And when it does may I suggest it comes to Perth as part of it? Would be a shame to miss Tim’s hometown out!

Amities,

SS

The team of Matilda deserve this for an outstanding show. My husband and I saw it in January and can understand why it has gained such a level of awards. Tim, we are big fans of your comedy and music. You are refreshingly talented and this is a right and rightful accalade to celebrate your hard work and talent. I hope you all celebrate in style!

There is no Olivier Award for Writer/Composer/Lyrics/Score/etc. Tim will just have to wait for a Tony Award when Matilda opens in New York next year.

John O'Brien on 15th of April 2012

Musical wins seven awards but the guy who wrote the music gets nothing?
Strange.
