Ready for a Christmas single with a difference?

By : ShellSunday, 13 December 2009 | 50 comments

OK, there are red cups at Starbucks and big socks in the shops… so what else is traditional at this time of the year? The Christmas single of course… but not the usual fare eh?

‘White Wine in the Sun’, the beautiful and sentimental encore to Tim’s ‘Ready For This?’ show has been released as a single for the first time and is now available on: iTunes

You can also get it elsewhere, if you are not into iTunes but the best way to ensure that your download counts towards the singles chart is to buy from iTunes.

We know getting it to chart is a ridiculous long shot… but just imagine if it did!

Update: It turns out it can be gifted through iTunes too, which is especially apt at this time of the year and for a Christmas single. Simply click “Gift This Music” under the information on the single’s page. However, it will ask the recipient to download iTunes if they do not already have it or to update if below Version 6. It’s even suitable for your auntie…and beats that pack of hankies she may give you hands down.

I already own it on CD…but I’ll buy it again to get it heard as it deserves. Are we trying to get it charting in any particular location? (IE: Should I as an Australian be buying from a UK site?)

Mr Minchin, you live forever at the top of the charts in my soul. Unfortunately , Billboard stopped polling my heart years ago…..

I’ve already got this on cd and I LOVE this song! I would also love to see it on the charts!

Posted by Tracey/rm on December 13, 2009

I’m imaging :) Fingers crossed and all that. xx

I adore this song. Hairs standing on the back of my neck when you played it at TAM London. Wish you a lovely white wine in the sun with your family!

One copy bought this morning, here’s hoping that our wee campaign works for you Mr Minchin!

This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, it’s beautiful.
Christmas number one may be a long shot, but we’ll give it a go. I bet it makes top 40 at least.

Posted by Stella Branch on December 13, 2009

Oh, yes, that’d be good..it makes me all teary (in a good way) whenever I hear it…even if it is my son singing and playing. Beautiful, simple, and downright Christmassy!

It brings a happy warm tear to my eye everytime . What’s known as juicy eyes x

Posted by James on December 13, 2009

Some random guys on the internet managed to get a song into number 30 something for children in need, so I am sure that you can get higher with this one. I will be buying a tad closer to christmas.

I’ll download it again for ya, Tim <3

Let's do this~! ^^

Absolutely beautiful song, Tim. Had me choked up at the Sydney show. Particularly as, at the age of 35, I’m spending my first ever Christmas away from my family this year. (Californian by birth, Australian by choice…)

Wooo downloaded mines from HMV :-D

brilliant, cannot wait 2 c him again live.

I am disturbed that none of these sites is American(US). I am a big fan here in the states. Love the song and album. Guess I have to wait for itunes.

Posted by Ikiru on December 14, 2009

Just bought the track from Amazon (US).

What a heartbreakingly beautiful song. Thank you for this…

We’re on it Tim!!! x

Posted by Jason on December 14, 2009

I would have commented sooner but I just watched it 6 times in a row. I think the performance really sells it because at first it seems like a kooky Christmas song with a punchline and then BAM it hits you right where it hurts. In a good way, of course. Thank you for sharing this wonderful song, heading over to Amazon to d/l it now.

Posted by Tracey/rm on December 14, 2009

Imagining not imaging, obviously.

Beautiful song and very poignant but next year please write one with the title Red Wine in the Snow which will suit our climate in Ireland better!

Just listened to your song- my daughter lives abroad, it made my husband and I both cry you hit the nail on the head. My other daughter is a big fan and has been to many of your gigs in the UK.

Posted by cooljooles on December 14, 2009

Bought it .. go TIM!

Posted by Rachel Grimes on December 14, 2009

BUY…BUY…BUY, i’m sick of the overly produced drivel that normally gets to no.1, even if Tims sublime song gets in the top 40 this weekend, it would be an achievement Tim deserves, would love to hear it played to the masses on the radio, show people that he can do songs like this and ‘Not Perfect’,as well as lung popping funny stuff!!
Gotta love it!! x

I bought mine on iTunes earlier today. I intend to play it every time I hear the Right Wing’s noisy cannons roaring in their fake “War on Christmas.” Thank you, Tim, for a song that reminds of of what’s really important at Christmas – an all year ’round.

Posted by Dietra Tewalt on December 15, 2009

Dear Tim,
Thanks for giving us a reason to consider taking christmas back. As atheists, we’d pretty much black balled it. You even made my punked out, mohawk sporting, 14 year old son tear up with this song. He lost his Dad when he was 5 and the refrain was a killer. Kudos. Please come to the states (eastcoast) soon.

I have just been browsing youtube and stumbled accross this new song from Tim. Ialways get excited at the sight of a new song i havnt heard. I listened and would just like to say Tim, I am never dissapointed. Even my greatest idols have dissapointed me at some stage however you my friend are clearly better than that. Ha. You truely do take my breath away. If only i could fuckin get a ticket when they go on sale here in england!! Dont worry tho, That doesnt count as a dissapointment on your part. Keep tinklin the ivories timmy. Kev Woods, England.

One of your best, Tim! Beautiful tribute for those of us who don’t believe in Christ but still love Christmas. Bought it from iTunes and hope it makes the charts.

White Wine in the Sun is the definitive Christmas carol…just beautiful. Thank you.

Posted by Caroline on December 16, 2009

Just seen tim at perth concert hall 4 the 1st time and feel thorougly entertained. He is a very talented and intelligent musical comedian. But god did that last christmas song kill me! Being a long way from family and havin a baby girl of my own i couldn’t hold back the tears. Thanks!

Posted by Les Curle on December 16, 2009

Tim – for what it’s worth I did some business with Heart FM today and I tried to wangle White Wine in the Sun onto their playlist. They said they would have a look at it but no promises.

Posted by Busybee6363 on December 16, 2009

Ahh, currently 71st on iTunes!! Keep buying, everyone!

Posted by PMT on December 16, 2009

Hi,

I heard the first minute or so of this wile driving the car and listening to Scott Mills. It is everything a Christmas song should be – sentimental and funny.

I loved it – am going to but it for my athiest pals.

xx

bought it, from a US account too! :)

Posted by Stevil on December 18, 2009

It’s a wonderful song and so deserving of the recognition that getting the Christmas number one (especially here in the UK with all the X Factor/Rage Against The Machine rubbish going on). I think I even got something in my eye at one point…
A true manifestation of the spirit of Christmas.

Tim for the Win!

Did you spot (of course you did) that David Tennant (thespian and erstwhile Time Lord) chose White Wine in the Sun as one of his Desert Island Discs? And when asked which one the eight discs (charming word) he would choose if he could have only one? Yep, he did! Intersting choice for the son of a Church of Scotland Minister.
