Hi Tim – I just heard you on the BBC’s Today programme. An impressive appearance for someone who is, apparently, not an early morning person. I had never heard of you before, but I will look out for you now because you made me think. Your analysis of the difference between art and AI goes straight to the core of the issue – AI can only reproduce exactly what we ask it to, and so long as we input the right data it will regurgitate the same thing innumerable times. Humans make art, struggling to transcend their own imperfections.and we are astonished, breath taken, to see or hear an artist’s achievement – whether it be in music or the visual arts or written word. Let’s focus on the music here. That same music, created by one composer, even in a different century, be it a folk song or a violin concerto, is different every time it’s performed. It becomes part of the life of each performer, and also of each listener for whom it will mean something personal and who if the stars align and the performer succeeds, is blessed all over again to hear it. All that said, I, at the grand old age of 74, have just begun using AI to help compress a few sections of my 3rd family history book which I’ve been trying to finish for about three years. Magic! I might even get it finished this year..
And now I’ve found your website, which I will revisit at intervals. For the moment, just one minor point: “You’ll be surprised where our sexy Darius has ended up” is a statement, not a question, so it doesn’t need a question mark. I know, I’m a pedant, but for me grammar is important and it bugs me when something like that turns up. It distracts me from the important content. I’ve often thought of starting a blog called Grumpy Granny’s Grammar Gripes – but then I remember that I’m a pedant and most of the world doesn’t seem to be interested in the detail of grammar if the meaning of the content is clear.
I see from your gigs page that you have no more happening here in the UK, so “Slán Abhaile” [pron: Slawn awalye] as we Irish say. Literally it means “Safe home” – safe journey home.

I guess I’ll have to add the paperback version to my shelf too!
