Lyrics
If they would let me trade
I’d give a year for half a day just
curled up on the sofa with you
We’d wander down to Cottesloe eat fish and chips in the final glow
I’d hold my breath for I forgive you

Sometimes I feel you with me in the dark
And your face is in the faces of the strangers walking by me in the park

And reflected in your eyes
Is all my love and all my lies
Is all my promise and my pride
Is all my fear and all my fight
Is all my dread and my denial

And though we cannot be together I know
that I will carry you wherever I go
I will carry you
Lord knows
I will carry you
I will carry you

And reflected in your eyes
Is all my love and all my lies
Is all my promise and my pride
Is all my fear and all my fight
Is all my dread and my denial

And though we cannot be together I know
that I will carry you wherever I go
I will carry you
Lord knows
I will carry you
I will carry you
I will carry you
Lord knows
I will carry you
I will carry you

UPDATE (06/02/20): There’s a little film of Tim & Missy Higgins talking about their collaboration on ‘Carry You’ here.

I can only guess, but I never sussed out who this song was meant for and I’ve never heard Tim specify. Even Missy wasn’t quite sure in their interview and they left it intentionally vague.

I concluded that it had to be meant for Meg, especially given that Meg was present in the shot when he sang it in the show. I think it’s about wishing she could be his daughter. I think their relationship is the only possible thing a song this gorgeous could possibly be about.

You don’t cuddle with Mum on the sofa unless you’re a small child, and you don’t sing a song this intense to a piano.

I just watched Episode Three of Upright. I love everything about it so much….THANK YOU THANK YOU ! (Oh…I used to play the flute…)

BTW….Americans…can’t you tell Netflicks you want to see this series ? Make them buy it !!!!!!!! Or come to Canada and watch it on Super Channel…

This song is so impactful and it really elevated Upright to another level. I love the stripped down version from the show the most but this new version is lovely as well. Maybe it would depend on which one you heard first? I have not finished the show yet but I am now intrigued to hear the other show version mentioned by others to have a trifecta of great music.

As an Aussie ex-pat living away from home just now, this song makes me feel very homesick. Especially for Western Australia when Cottesloe beach is because I’ve sat there many a sunset eating fish n chips………. crying like a baby. Love both versions ♥️

Is there a way to buy this single in the US? I can shuffle-stream it on Spotify, but I’d like to be able to listen to it offline, too! (Also, please release a version of your own? Missy’s voice & performance are both brilliant, but yours is so much more…raw, I guess? She sounds nostalgic and bittersweet, you sound haunted and, like, resigned but hopeful or determined or something? Words, man. Being able to find the exact perfect one every time would be an awesome superpower. Anyway what I’m trying to say is I want to give someone money & be able to listen to this gorgeous song whenever I like, & I’d love to be able to hear you singing it. Pretty please?

P.S. 🎶closed bracket)

I can’t tell you how wonderful I found this show. I literally said out loud at the end of each episode, to no one but by my dog, “This is such a great show!”

Thank you Tim and if possible, pass this on to any others involved in such a fantastic piece of inspiring, gut-wrenching, moving art.

Lindsey on 23rd of January 2020

This is just gorgeous. I thought, by now, I could get through this song without crying……nope. At least it’s only a few tears now instead of snotty, ugly sobbing though.

Tracy on 23rd of January 2020

So beautiful. So heartbreaking.

Attezz on 23rd of January 2020

Oh great…now I’m crying again
