Yesterday evening the 12th annual Whatsonstage.com Awards took place at the West End’s Prince of Wales Theatre. These UK theatre industry awards are nominated by and voted for purely by theatregoers and the ticket-buying public. Matilda The Musical had received an incredible nine nominations!

Matilda the Musical triumphed, winning Best New Musical – Tim Minchin & Dennis Kelly; Best Set Designer – Rob Howell and Best Choreographer – Peter Darling.

Tim won The London Newcomer of the Year for his work on Matilda.

With 35% of the votes in his category, Australian comedian Tim Minchin, making his musical debut providing the show’s music and lyrics, was a commanding winner for London Newcomer of the Year.Whatsonstage.com

Tim:I’ve been around for a bit but newcomer implies that I like doing new stuff and that the industry expects me to keep doing stuff in the London theatre world, which I really hope I can do.

Many congratulations to Tim, the creative team, cast and everyone involved with Matilda the Musical!

Fantastic well done, please know this my daughters favourite film and book of all time. I would like to know when the performance rights to do a version will be available. I want to do this on my little Island in the middle of the Irish sea.

Went to see Matilda on Satuday and thought it was fantastic. Tim deserves a massive pat on the back, music was fantastic and the lyrics left you wanting to listen to the songs over and over again. I would recommend everyone goes to see this show at least once, it was fab.

Congratulations Tim, I am so happy that the theatre world have recognised your talent, on an extremely selfish note I do hope we can still see you in your own concerts, I have seen you both at Nottingham Playhouse and Ice Arena and your genius just grows and grows. I adore you ( in a non religious, stalking, yukky way)
Oh and please let Matilda come to Nottingham Theatre Royal soon, we always seem to be the last on the list!

Hi Tim,

Congratulations on a very thoroughly deserved award. I teach music in Melbourne and have played my Yr 6’s a few snippets from the CD this term, as well as clips from the Matilda web page. I have never seen Yr 6 boys so enthralled by any other musical before – they are all hanging out for it to come to Melbourne! As I walked across the quad just now, 3 of them were belting out “Revolting Children” on their way to the IT lab. Well done!

From now on the only way your comedy world goes is down. The real stuff’s coming. My heart bit is slowing down.

The awards are so deserved by all concerned. The work those children put in to learn Tim’s lyrics was mindblowing! And both shows we saw were faultless. It’s definitely the most entertained I’ve ever seen my nephews who spent half the show with their mouths open. Can’t wait to see your next piece of work Tim – but I know it’ll be well worth the wait. Love and hugs x

Hello Tim,

Congratulations! You completely deserved to win it. I’m surprised Matilda didn’t win more awards. I saw it last Saturday with my father, and it was the best musical I have ever seen. I left feeling elated, and that it had been a successful musical – I had laughed, cried, felt I knew the characters and wanted to by the CD so I could hear all these great songs again. I love ‘When I Grow Up’ – the lyrics are so obviously Tim – all of the music was clearly Tim. It was fantastic! Also, I love ‘Naughty’ and ‘Loud’, each song captured the character who was singing it, and it elated the feeling of the moment intended to be portrayed, for example, ‘When I Grow Up’ made that feeling of happiness, and the naivety of children seem more dramatic and real. Also, I am 14 years old, which would deem me a little too old to be seeing Matilda, without the excuse of a younger sibling, but that is a false stereotype. It was a show for all ages. Absolutely fantastic. Congratulations again Tim. A well deserved award. Keep going!
